Defective Play Kitchen Leads to Toddler's Tragic Death, Initiating Recall
Recall Announced for KidKraft Farm to Table Play Kitchen Due to Strangulation Hazard
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued a nationwide recall for the KidKraft Farm to Table Model Play Kitchen following a tragic incident in Oregon in February 2023. A 23-month-old toddler died after his clothing got caught on hooks used to hold toy kitchen accessories on the back of the play kitchen, causing strangulation and asphyxia.
Safety Concerns and Recommended Actions
The hazard arises when young children climb on the counter or crawl through the opening at the back of the play kitchen, where their clothing can catch on the hooks. To prevent any potential risk of strangulation or death, the CPSC advises immediate action.
Parents and caregivers should immediately stop using the KidKraft Farm to Table Play Kitchen, remove the original hooks, and contact Backyard Kids, LLC for free replacement hooks designed to eliminate the hazard. Backyard Kids provides instructions and support for requesting replacement parts via their toll-free number (800-882-0234), email ([email protected]), or online at KidKraft.com.
Affected Units and Additional Context
Approximately 192,000 units sold between 2018 and July 2025 are affected by the recall. Backyard Kids acquired KidKraft, Inc., which filed for bankruptcy in May 2024. The recall is voluntary and includes all units regardless of sales through Backyard Kids. No other reports of injury have been received beyond the one fatality.
The recalled play kitchens were sold online through major retailers like Amazon, Walmart, and KidKraft's website, as well as directly from Backyard Kids. A small number of the recalled kitchens made it into Canada.
Implications and Future Considerations
One life lost due to a hook in the play kitchen is already too many. This incident serves as a reminder that product testing must evolve as real-world use uncovers hidden dangers. Play kitchens, even when used for creative and pretend play, can carry real risks.
KidKraft has since filed for bankruptcy, though it is unclear if this is directly tied to the child's death or the resulting recall. The recall remains active at this time. This incident underscores the importance of vigilance in toy safety and the need for ongoing monitoring and reporting of concerns.
