Meningococci are bacteria that are transmitted through droplets, such as during coughing or sneezing. The health department in Potsdam, along with the Landesamt für Gesundheit und Soziales (LAGuS) Brandenburg, is responsible for identifying and handling possible further contacts in relation to the meningococcal outbreak. Hospitals and the Robert Koch-Institute are also involved in the investigation and control of the situation. These institutions are in charge of contact person follow-up, prophylactic examinations, and treatment.

Students in the affected class and other contacts have already received prophylactic antibiotic treatment. The health department estimates that there is no increased risk for the general population. However, further possible contacts are currently being identified.

It's important to note that meningococcal infections are relatively rare in Germany. The last reported case of meningococcal infection in Potsdam was in 2018. Meningococci can cause life-threatening meningitis or blood poisoning.
