Committee Members of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices
In the realm of public health, one body stands out for its crucial role in protecting Americans: the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP). This esteemed committee is composed of independent medical and public health experts, each selected for their expertise in immunization and public health.
The committee, which can have up to 19 voting members, does not employ individuals from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Instead, it draws its membership from a diverse pool of professionals, both within and outside of the CDC.
In addition to the voting members, ACIP also includes six ex officio members who represent other federal agencies. These agencies include the Department of Defense, the Health Resources and Services Administration, and the Indian Health Service, among others.
Beyond these official members, ACIP boasts a network of 30 liaison organizations. These groups, such as the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the National Association of County and City Health Officials, bring valuable immunization expertise to the table.
Recently, the committee underwent a reorganization, resulting in the appointment of five new members by U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. in 2025. The new members include Dr. Kirk Milhoan, a pediatric cardiologist, Dr. Catherine Stein, an epidemiologist, and Hillary Blackburn, a pharmacist. This reorganization has brought the committee's total membership to 12. However, this change has sparked controversy due to the critical views of some new appointees on COVID-19 vaccines and established vaccination practices.
At its core, ACIP's primary responsibility is to make vaccine recommendations in the United States. This role is essential in ensuring that Americans receive the best possible protection against preventable diseases.
In essence, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) is a vital cog in the wheel of public health, working tirelessly to safeguard the health of the American people.
