Championing Global Advancement: Suzy Amis Cameron Shares Insights on Improving Our World

Suzy Amis Cameron, a former actress and advocate, congregates in Rome to launch a new branch of Inside Out (IO). This global organization strives to push the boundaries of innovation, focusing particularly on the realm of IO's Fashion, Textiles, and Home vertical to bring about a cleaner, more sustainable outlook towards fashion. The Roman chapter is anticipated to mould the fashion industry into a catalyst for sustainable change, making Rome a torchbearer of eco-friendly fashion.

For 63-year-old Cameron, a mother of five and the wife of Avatar filmmaker James Cameron, this moment feels almost predestined. Her upbringing on a farm in Oklahoma nurtured a deep respect for nature that she carried into her career as a model and actress. These roots have propelled her to the international stage, allowing her to raise concerns about the need for change across the globe.

"Everything from being outdoors in nature to being in ballet classes when I was five years old, and then doing gymnastics and getting very, very involved in horseback riding," she expresses, underscoring the various experiences that honed her physical awareness, granting her the ability to grace runways and screens effortlessly. This unique journey, she believes, has led her to where she stands today.

In her pursuit of making a positive impact on the world, Cameron has experienced numerous 'ah-ha' moments, including the period when she was pregnant with her first child and was introduced to organic produce. This introduction led her to question the safety of the various products she used, ultimately spurring her to adopt a healthier lifestyle.

Another catalyst for change arrived in 2012, when she watched the documentary, Forks Over Knives. The film, which posits that food is medicine, had a profound effect on the Cameron family, convincing them to adopt a plant-based lifestyle overnight. By 2018, Cameron had not only written a book, OMD: The Simple, Plant-Based Program to Save Your Health, Save Your Waistline, and Save the Planet, but also sparked a movement she called OMD (one meal a day). In 2020, American talk show host Oprah Winfrey became a subscriber to the plan.

Imbibing the maxim "Every meal is a chance to nourish our bodies, show care for our communities, and make a positive impact on the planet," Cameron champions small, meaningful steps towards change. By advocating informed tweaks to the status quo, she believes lasting change can be brought about.

With her thirst for knowledge, she delved into the waste humanity generates, uncovering the toxins that taint our food, water, and clothes. This research culminated in the 2024 documentary, Let Them Be Naked, directed by designer Jeff Garner. The film highlights the contamination of clothes and the ensuing ailments, shedding light on the need for transparency within the fashion industry and advocating for systemic change.

"In terms of household name designers that we know, we’re currently consulting and working with many of them now," she states, hinting at future collaborations with industry giants to drive sustainable fashion practices.

Cameron's recent project, Inside Out, transcends the realm of fashion, encompassing six verticals: IO Science, Research, and Technology; IO Fashion, Textiles, and Home (IO FTH); IO Global Food Production (IO GFP); IO Education; IO Media; and IO Wellness. The core philosophy of the initiative revolves around understanding the impact of what we consume on both our health and the planet's well-being, advocating a holistic approach towards sustainability and health.

Responsibility to investors and a focus on return on investment, impact, and integrity form the cornerstone of Inside Out's operations, ensuring a balance between financial success and sustainable practices. For Cameron, this mission is profoundly personal, forged by her own experiences and her conviction that systemic change is not only possible but essential.

The task of bettering the world is not an easy one, but for Cameron, change is inevitable and within reach. As a starting point, she proposes swapping animal protein with plant-based alternatives to save water and reduce carbon emissions. By embracing small, intentional changes, she encourages everyone to contribute to a more sustainable planet.
