Boil Water Advisory Issued for Greifswald After Microbial Contamination
A laboratory has discovered microbial contamination with enterococci in the drinking water at Groß Schönwalde waterworks, prompting a boiling order for the entire city area of Greifswald, excluding the island of Riems.
Extensive test samples were taken on Monday, 08.09.2025, to assess the situation. The County Health Department is closely monitoring the issue, maintaining constant communication with the Greifswald municipal utilities. While the cause of the contamination remains unknown, the department has issued a precautionary measure, advising residents to boil their drinking water.
The Greifswald municipal utilities, responsible for regular inspections, have reported slight exceedances of limit values at a sampling point. Although the contamination may cause gastrointestinal irritation, no other significant health hazards are anticipated.
