Bicyclists and electric scooters drawing public attention in political discussions
On Thursday, September 11, the Hamm Police, in collaboration with the organization Amprion, conducted an operation focused on improving bicycle safety in the city. The day's events aimed to reduce accidents through traffic enforcement and prevention measures.
During the operation, officers detected and penalized 54 traffic violations. One of the violations involved a 41-year-old Hamm resident who was found to be using marijuana, as confirmed by a drug test. This individual was taken to the police station for a blood test.
Another incident occurred on Friedrich-Ebert-Straße, where a motorcycle patrol stopped an e-scooter rider, also a 41-year-old Hamm resident. Upon check, it was found that the scooter was tampered with, making its operating permit invalid. Consequently, the scooter rider now faces an administrative offense procedure.
Many citizens took advantage of the opportunity to register their bikes in the local database and received tips on suitable locks. Moreover, many preventive talks were held with cyclists and pedelec riders, emphasizing the particular dangers they face when not adhering to traffic rules.
The police continue to appeal to all cyclists to follow traffic rules, not to ride on the sidewalk, and not to use their phones while riding. These actions could result in a fine and, in case of an accident, criminal consequences.
