Auburn Hospital reveals advanced PET/CT scanner, augmented by a $2 million federal grant

In a significant stride for local healthcare, Auburn Community Hospital (ACH) has launched a new Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Computed Tomography (CT) scanner. This advanced technology, built by General Electric, is the most sophisticated in the region, promising to revolutionise cancer care and diagnostic imaging in Cayuga County.

The new PET/CT scanner offers improved accuracy in cancer detection, staging, and monitoring, thanks to its ability to create high-resolution, three-dimensional images. The integration of PET and CT allows for a comprehensive view of cancerous tissues and the body’s metabolic activity in a single scan, supporting better informed clinical decisions.

This upgrade was made possible by a $2 million federal grant, secured by U.S. Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer. Schumer praised the development, stating it expands rural access to high-quality healthcare services. Dr. Alan Sherburne, President of the Medical Executive Committee, echoed these sentiments, expressing his excitement about the new technology at ACH.

The new PET/CT scanner eliminates the need for patients to travel long distances for diagnostic scans, as quick results are now available locally. Appointments can be scheduled quickly, often within the same week a patient first comes in. ACH Technologist Jessica Donlon highlighted the convenience for families with the new in-house system.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new scanner was attended by hospital executives, board members, medical staff, and community leaders. The event marked a milestone in the hospital's commitment to providing high-quality health care for generations.

In summary, the benefits of the new PET/CT scanner include improved diagnostic accuracy, better cancer treatment planning, increased convenience and access to advanced imaging for local patients, and overall strengthened oncology services within the community hospital setting. This investment in advanced technology not only enhances local healthcare but also underscores the community's importance and the ongoing commitment to improving healthcare access and quality in the region.

The new PET/CT scanner, equipped at Auburn Community Hospital (ACH), is set to enhance medical-conditions diagnosis, particularly in cancer care, through its improved accuracy and high-resolution images. This science-driven innovation, funded in part by a federal grant, emphasizes ACH's dedication to health-and-wellness, notably by providing a more accessible and quality diagnostic experience for local patients.
