In the heart of Regina, the city witnessed a significant gathering as the annual homelessness conference hosted by Namerind took place. This year, the event attracted over 300 participants, a stark contrast to the six attendees at its inception.

The conference continued its focus on preventing homelessness, with a special emphasis on youth in this instance. Speakers from across Canada shared their insights, emphasising the importance of finding long-term solutions rather than temporary, unsafe solutions like shelters.

Robert Byers, CEO of Namerind Housing Corporation, was one of the key speakers. He strongly believes that homelessness should be viewed as a problem rather than the homeless themselves. He attributes the increase in conference attendance to changes over the years.

Heidi Walter, a specialist in youth homelessness, also graced the stage. She highlighted that 77% of individuals leave home due to conflict. Kakakaway, Indigenous training and relations consultant for A Way Home Canada, was another key speaker. She suggested that discrimination or racism can create an added hurdle in preventing youth homelessness.

Kakakaway also emphasised the importance of working with families in preventing youth homelessness. She and Walter proposed school-based solutions as a potential way to support students at risk of homelessness.

The conference featured individuals sharing their personal stories about homelessness, aiming to bring people together to move forward with solutions. The solutions discussed included affordable housing, early prevention, and spreading awareness.

Other key speakers at the conference included Dr. Emily Stein and Professor Lars Müller, who also spoke about ending youth homelessness and prevention as a key focus. The Regina homelessness conference aimed to bring people together to discuss and find solutions to this pressing issue.
