The Ocean City Fire Department in Maryland responded to a carbon monoxide incident at the Ashore Hotel, located at 10100 Coastal Highway, on a Friday morning.

Upon arrival, emergency responders found elevated levels of carbon monoxide on the first and second floors of the hotel. As a result, a total of 18 people were evaluated, four of whom were taken to area hospitals with elevated levels of carbon monoxide in their blood. One person declined a transport.

The incident commander declared a mass casualty incident due to the large number of people requiring medical attention. The local gas company, the town building inspectors, and the fire marshal's office are on scene, working to find the source of the probable leak.

The carbon monoxide leak was caused by a ventilation issue with a boiler in the hotel. Specifically, the boiler's ventilation problem led to the buildup of carbon monoxide indoors, triggering alarms. The hotel’s boiler has been shut down and is undergoing repairs to address the issue.

No further details about the cause of the carbon monoxide incident have been provided. The Ashore Hotel, located in Ocean City, Maryland, has not released any information regarding the current status of the guests who were not hospitalized.
